It started with an idea - why talk about the future when you can create it? We keep hearing promises of the digital home. Can I make it a reality?

What if us Colligans decided that for the year 2007, all media that entered our house only came over the Internet? And, by the way, I’m talking legally here, so the bit-torrent AllofMp3 stuff will have to be the content for someone else’s blog.

I mentioned the idea first publically here. Got a lost of responses.

It won’t be easy - but it will be a lot of fun.

Things I hope to report:

What really works? I’m gonna bring it all in and test these grand theories of in-house fullscreen wireless video streaming and video downloads that are “DVD quality.” Will we be able to tell the difference? Will the experience be marred with broken streams and muddy pictures? Will my wife put up with it?

Where are the holes? Will some popular show appear that we won’t be able to buy? Will some band not be available on iTunes? Will some cultural wonder appear in 2007 that I won’t be able to grab? Will my high speed broadband connection be enough?

Who is the best? That Xbox Media Center integration stuff is very cool - but Amazon Unbox, Akimbo and the coming iTV project will be contenders for my attention. When I plop down for a little couch potato time, which remote will I grab for? Will some rising Video Podcast star be on the top of my list? When ZeFrank is on the same remote at David Letterman …?

What could be better? Yes, I’ll have the equipment, but you’ll bet I’ll have some ideas on how to make it better.

What will I be “jonesin” for? Will it be the ruffle of a newspaper that I long for? Will it be watching the 24 finale perfectly times so I can skip through the commercials? Will my kids miss “Tivo Guy” as much as they tell me they will?

It will be a grand experiment. Join me for the ride?
