Strike 1 - The Unfortunate Incident of the Xbox 360 Universal Remote

Posted on 5:50 pm by Paul Colligan
I purchased the Xbox 360 Universal Remote in hopes that it would make this thing “easier” for the less geeky element of my household (which includes everyone but me).

Hey, honey, look, it has less buttons than our other remote did!

It’s actually not a bad remote but for one SILLY little feature. To toggle between the TV and the Xbox (why else do you buy a Universal Remote) unless you want to use it for other things, you have to, get this, push the “TV” button.

To move from Xbox to TV controls, you have to push the “TV” button. I get that, fine.

But to switch from TV to Xbox controls, you have to push the “TV” button. WTH?

I tried to explain this completely unintuitive “feature” to my Wife and she claimed to “get it” - but then it happened …

Earlier today she calls from upstairs … “Paul, can you help for a minute” - in that voice that says the sooner you come up the better.

She was trying to play a video using the Xbox remote. She could make the TV work fine (we were in TV mode) but couldn’t, for the life of her, make anything Xbox work. Sure the Big Xbox button asked if she wanted to sign out but what does that mean, really? The Green button for Media Extender doesn’t work, the Play buttons didn’t work, etc.

I said, oh, “Hit the TV button.”

She says “But I don’t need the TV, I need the Xbox.”

Exactly.

Microsoft, when is v2 of the remote coming out?
