It Happened This Weekend, And Nobody Said A Thing
Posted on 11:31 am by Paul ColliganThey call it their “Unbox Weekend Sale.” In honor of the opening of Spider Man III, they have other “super” downloads for just $4.99 - the new Superman movie, Spiderman 1 and 2 - even “Mystery Men.”
That’s right, $4.99 to OWN the movies.
People have been complaining, rightly, that it’s insane to charge the same price for digital downloads as for the shrinkwrapped plastic pieces Walmart gets a 50% markup on.
The problem was that people were willing to pay that price - and when someone is willing to pay, … let them.
But, today … I can buy Superman Returns for $4.99 at Unbox. Amazon.com wants $19.99 for the standard DVD elsewhere at the Website.
I don’t know this for certain but I’ll guess that without the shipping, packaging, pressing, etc. that everyone makes more on the $4.99 deal than the $19.99 option. Sure there are some paper mills and plastic makers that have been taken out of the loop.
But is that such a bad thing?
Anyway - the story is this … the prices are going down - and the “big studies” are letting them.
Expect a lot more of this.
It all started this weekend.
