It Happened This Weekend, And Nobody Said A Thing

If you head out to Amazon Unbox this weekend, you’ll notice something very cool.

They call it their “Unbox Weekend Sale.” In honor of the opening of Spider Man III, they have other “super” downloads for just $4.99 - the new Superman movie, Spiderman 1 and 2 - even “Mystery Men.”

That’s right, $4.99 to OWN the movies.

People have been complaining, rightly, that it’s insane to charge the same price for digital downloads as for the shrinkwrapped plastic pieces Walmart gets a 50% markup on.

The problem was that people were willing to pay that price - and when someone is willing to pay, … let them.

But, today … I can buy Superman Returns for $4.99 at Unbox. Amazon.com wants $19.99 for the standard DVD elsewhere at the Website.

I don’t know this for certain but I’ll guess that without the shipping, packaging, pressing, etc. that everyone makes more on the $4.99 deal than the $19.99 option. Sure there are some paper mills and plastic makers that have been taken out of the loop.

But is that such a bad thing?

Anyway - the story is this … the prices are going down - and the “big studies” are letting them.

Expect a lot more of this.

It all started this weekend.
